Ulster’s Tom Stewart has been called up to the Ireland team after Rónan Kelleher picked up a hamstring injury in training

January 30, 2023 by

ULSTER HOOKER TOM STEWART has been called up to Andy Farrell’s Six Nations squad ahead of the opening game against Wales in the Principality Stadium this Saturday.

The 22-year-old Belfast native replaces Ronan Kelleher, who picked up a hamstring injury in training this week.

Stewart has joined the Ireland camp in Quinta do Lago, Algarve ahead of the Six Nations opener.

The Ulster front row forward is a former Ireland u20 international and with his inclusion brings the total number of players that played in the Emerging Ireland tour in the current senior Ireland squad to five.

Stewart is joined by the likes of Munster’s Jack Crowley, Leinster’s Joe McCarthy, Jamie Osborne, and Connacht’s Cian Prendergast, who all featured on the EI tour.

The youngster was included in the victories over the Griquas and the Cheetahs. The Ireland coaching group also included him in the match day preparations for the Ireland ‘A’ game against the All Blacks XV in November.

Johnny Sexton and Tadhg Furlong are also expected to make their return to the squad ahead of the Wales game.

Sexton and Furlong have been absent for Leinster for several weeks and missed some of the November international games.

Ireland’s team for the Wales game will be announced later this week.

Fans of the Ireland team can watch it live on Virgin Media One this coming Saturday.

The game kicks off at 14.15 in Wales.
