There is something fitting about where Malachy McCourt is calling from as I speak to him about his dark and hilarious new book Death Need Not Be Fatal. McCourt is at a Manhattan rehabilitation facility, where he will spend the next few weeks recovering from a “severe attack” of gout. “I’m doing pretty good now,” he says, sounding lively and cheerful enough given what he’s … [Read more...] about Taunting Death with Malachy McCourt

By Sarah Fearon, Contributor

October 1, 2015 by Leave a Comment

Three comedic performers with Irish roots share how they get to the laughter. Is it the collective painful history as a people? The tendency not to take themselves too seriously? The influence of Irish hospitality? Or maybe they were just born that way. The larger-than-life Malachy McCourt, the sardonic Kevin Brennan, and the sophisticated, witty Maureen Langan shed some light … [Read more...] about What’s So Funny?

Frank and Malachy McCourt in A Couple of Blaguards

Malachy McCourt writes about being an alcoholic and what it was that finally made him stop drinking. Was I born alcoholic? That’s not clear but I know that the disease does not discriminate against race, gender, age, position, or religion. It is an incurable disease that can be handled by taking certain precautions, foremost of which is putting down the drink – anywhere but … [Read more...] about Sober

William Trevor, short story-writer and novelist, was born in Co. Cork. Trevor, who has won the Whitbread Prize three times and has been short-listed five times for the Booker Prize, is considered one of Ireland’s greatest writers. In a rare interview with Irish America magazine in 1992 Trevor said, “I think we Irish are a nation of storytellers. If you study the way we argue, you find we sometimes do so by telling a story. We make points by telling stories. They tell far more stories in the Dail than they do in the British House of Commons. I can never explain why stories are natural in Ireland, but they are, and sometimes it’s better to leave it at that, and just say the are.”
