The prize is awarded annually to a graduating senior who demonstrates an outstanding potential to be a writer, and was created to raise money in Frank’s name to fund an award for an exceptional student writer who attends the public high school that bears his name on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The Frank McCourt High School of Writing, Journalism and Literature is a screened-admissions public high school founded in October 2009 by the New York City Department of Education, along with several community partners.
