An exhibit celebrating the accomplishments of Irish-American women is coming to Dreams of Freedom: Boston’s Immigration Museum, from February 17 — April 30, 2003.

“Fire Upon the Hearth: A Celebration of Irish American Women” features dozens of Irish immigrant and American-born women who made significant contributions in the fields of work, politics, education, literature, religion, performance, culture and athletics. The traveling exhibit is on loan from the Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany, and has appeared in museums throughout the U.S. and Ireland.

A number of New England women are featured, including labor organizer Mary Kenny O’Sullivan, educator Annie Sullivan, writers Mary McGrory and Mary Higgins Clark, poet Fanny Parnell, astronaut Christa McAuliffe, ice skater Nancy Kerrigan and political matriarch Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy and her daughter Jean Kennedy Smith.

A program of lectures, readings, film screenings, story telling and music and dance performances is supplementing the exhibit. On March 8, International Women’s Day, the museum will host a foram discussion on Immigrant Women in Boston that features speakers from the city’s various immigrant communities.

Dreams of Freedom is an exciting multi-media attraction that celebrates the city’s history over the last three centuries, exploring the dreams of millions of immigrants who enriched Boston. It is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is $7.50 general, $6.50 senior citizens and college students, $3.50 children between 6-18. Credit cards are accepted, and the facility is wheelchair accessible. ♦
