Man in his 60s dies in Co. Wicklow collision

A MAN in his 60s has died following road traffic collision in Co. Wicklow. The incident occurred on the R725, Rath East, Shillelagh at around 6.50pm on Friday. The deceased man was the driver of one of the cars, while his female passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Man holds broken glass to baby’s head during Belfast hijack ordeal

A MAN hijacked a car in Belfast with a mother and her young baby inside, before holding a piece of broken glass to the baby's head and ordering them out of the car. Representatives appointed by Eamon de Valera of the Irish government, who include revolutionary Michael Collins, meet with representatives of the crown on this day in 1921 to sign the Anglo-Irish treaty. This officially marked the end of the Irish War for Independence. Collins, who did not support the agreement, remarked “I have signed by own death warrant.” One year later, however, the Irish Free State would come into being.
