‘Major milestone’ for Irish defence forces as third new aircraft delivered

A NEW cargo aircraft for the Irish Air Corps has landed in Dublin this week. Its arrival at Casement Aerodrome marks the third Airbus C-295 aircraft to be delivered for the Irish defence forces in the past two years. PLACES on the annual Dublin Marathon will now only be available through the ballot system the organisers have confirmed. Witness appeal after woman in her 80s dies in Co. Cavan collision

A PENSIONER has died following a collision in Co. Cavan. Two cars collided on a local road in Carrickatober at ariund 3.30pm on October 7. One of the drivers, a woman in her 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, a woman in her 40s, was brought to Cavan General Hospital for assessment. Edna O’Brien, Irish novelist and short story writer, was born on this day in County Clare in 1930. Born to strictly religious parents, O’Brien described her childhood as suffocating. She was educated from 1941 to 1946 by the Sisters of Mercy. She then went on to receive a license in pharmacy in 1950. O’Brien turned to writing and published “The County Girls” in 1960. It was the first in a trilogy that was banned from Ireland. In 2009, she received the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Book Awards in Dublin.
