Just seven days into the New Year, the Irish community in New York and in the entire country were shocked by the news of the first major legal battle wonby Irish Republicans in America for as long as anyone could remember. On that day a federal judge admitted that Bronx resident Sean Mackin, 33, would suffer certain persecution if he was deported back to his native Northern … [Read more...] about Blazes Boylan

Mary Calls for Aid to Somalia President Mary Robinson reported to the United Nations that she was "shocked and horrified" by what she saw during her late October visit to Somalia, the East African country where more than 1,000 people are dying of famine daily. Unionists Walk Out on Talks The continuing saga of what has come to be popularly known as "The Talks" floundered badly recently after leaders of Northern Ireland's Unionist party walked out on negotiations with the government of the Irish Republic. At stake are Articles Two and Three of the Irish Constitution, which spell out the Republic's aspiration for a united Ireland. … [Read more...] about Blazes Boylan

Rape, Ireland's New Legacy The closing half of the twentieth century has been an awkward time for Ireland. A nation still only 70 years old, it has had more than its share of growing pains as it stumbles into maturity. Eamon de Valera's age of innocence in the 1930's, 40's and 50's has erupted in recent years, as a country formerly under the firm hand of the Catholic Church … [Read more...] about Blazes Boylan

The United Nations was born in Washington, D.C. on this day in 1945. During a short ceremony, representatives from a total of 29 nations ratified the UN charter which declared that nations work together to uphold human rights and work together to overcome social, economic, humanitarian and political challenges. Formed in the wake of World War II, Ireland was at first denied access to the UN on the grounds that the country took a neutral stance during the war and did not aid the Allied forces. Ireland was accepted into the UN ten years later, in 1955. Although Ireland did not join NATO, they became an active nation, contributing Irish Defence Forces to UN peace-keeping missions in Congo, Cyprus, Lebanon and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
