Nell McCafferty, campaigning journalist and activist, dies at 80

NELL McCAFFERTY, journalist, author, women’s rights activist, feminist and civil rights campaigner, has died at the age of 80. She passed away at a Donegal nursing home after a long illness. Slovak politician stops ‘perverted’ Irish play

A FAR-RIGHT Slovak politician sparked outrage locally after he disrupted a performance of Dublin playwright Elaine Murphy's play Little Gem. Extradition of man convicted of killing PSNI officer

SHANE Frane who killed a PSNI officer in Derry in 2024 has been extradited from the Republic of Ireland to serve out the rest of his sentence. Toxic blue-green algae spotted on Ireland’s north coast

Blue-green algae has been found on the north coast of Derry and Antrim. Scientists noted an increase in the amount of the potentially toxic algae at Lough Neagh at the beginning of August, and had established it was in the Bann River system. Riots broke out in Londonderry after mid-Ulster MP Bernadette Devlin was arrested. Devlin, who participated in the Bogside riots of 1969, was sentenced to six months in jail. She had previously applied for an appeal, which was rejected by the Northern Ireland Court of Appeals. When police attempted to arrest Devlin at a roadblock in Londonderry, violence quickly escalated with the use of petrol bombs to which soldiers responded with tear gas.
