Diageo fined £500k after worker sustains serious burns

DIAGEO has been fined half a million pounds after an employee sustained burns to more than thirty per cent of his body while at work. Tánaiste claims new €53m government jet will be a ‘game-changer’ for Ireland

IRELAND has agreed a deal to purchase a new government jet which will cost the nation over €53m. Irish parliament elects Verona Murphy as first ever female speaker

VERONA MURPHY has been elected Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann - making her the first woman to ever hold the role. Maud Gonne McBride, Irish patriot, revolutionary and Home Rule activist, was born in Dublin on this day in 1865. Following her mother’s death, Gonne was sent to Paris for her education. When she returned to Ireland, Gonne moved to Donegal where she became involved in a campaign to protect people from home evictions. This was the start of her very active political career. She wrote articles on feminist and political issues and founded the revolutionary group, Daughters of Erin. However, she is best remembered as being William Butler Yeats’s muse, although she never returned his love.
