Death of farmer who made national news after shooting dead an intruder on his farm

THE Co. Mayo farmer Padraig Nally, who came to prominence 20 years ago when he shot an intruder at his farm, has died. The 81-year-old shot John 'Frog' Ward at his farm near the village of Cross in October 2004. Forrest Reid, Irish novelist and literary critic, was born on this day in Belfast in 1875. To this day, Reid is regarded amongst the likes of J.M. Barrie and Hugh Walpole as a pre-war British boyhood novelist. His most famous work was Young Tom, for which he won a James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1944.
