Woman in her 60s dies following house fire in Co. Offaly

A WOMAN in her 60s has died following a house fire in Co. Offaly. The incident occurred at around 10pm on Friday at the property in Moneygall on the Offaly/Tipperary border. Puffins return to Co. Antrim Island after 25-year absence

PUFFINS have been recorded nesting on the Isle of Muck in County Antrim for the first time in a quarter of a century. Ireland among EU’s top earners in 2024

IRELAND ranked among the European Union’s top three highest-paying countries in 2024. New data from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical agency, shows that Ireland’s average annual full-time salary reached €61,100 last year, placing it third behind Denmark (€71,600) and Luxembourg (€83,000). On this day in 1834, Daniel O’Connell, the Irish political leader often referred to as “The Liberator” or “The Emancipator,” sparked a debate in the British House of Commons by calling for a repeal to the 1801 Act of Union. During a five-hour speech, O’Connell questioned the 2/17 tax that Britain had levied on Ireland, calling it a “fraction purposely introduced in order that Ireland might be robbed with greater facility.” Previously, O’Connell had successfully campaigned for the right for Catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament. A critic of violent insurrection and a staunch abolitionist, he would serve as an inspiration to Frederick Douglass, and later to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
