Police investigation into killing of IRA man Colum Marks was ‘wholly inadequate’

THE Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland has found a police investigation into the Troubles-era killing of an IRA man was “wholly inadequate”. Colum Marks was shot by a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) officer, known as Officer B, on the evening of April 10,1991 in Downpatrick, in Co. Down. He later died from his injuries in hospital. Irish eyes are smiling: Ireland up to 15th in list of world’s happiest countries

IRELAND has ranked at 15th in a report published today ranking the world's happiest countries. The position marks an increase on last year's 17th place in the World Happiness Report. Appeal for witnesses after buses destroyed in overnight arson attack

Frank Patterson, known as “Ireland’s Golden Tenor”, died on this day in 2000 at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Born in Co. Tipperary in 1938, Patterson started singing as a young boy with his local church choir. He moved to Dublin in 1961 to enroll at the National Academy of Theater and studied acting and received vocal training. While studying in Paris, he caught the attention of Philips Recording Company after a radio broadcast. He signed a deal with the company and recorded his first record “My Dear Native Land.” He moved to the U.S. where he achieved the most success, selling out New York’s Carnegie Hall. He performed for Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.
