For eleven months of the year, you may calculate carbs, foreswear fat for fiber, pick protein over pasta, consume skinny-conscious salads, and dutifully deny yearnings for the taste of something sweet. That's a good thing, because from Thanksgiving until the beginning of January, we will encounter a continuous parade of tables piled high with succulent turkeys and hams, … [Read more...] about Enjoy the Holiday Feast

The current ubiquity of Oscar-winning playwright John Patrick Shanley in New York City's theaters is unparalleled. A brief walk around Manhattan finds his name in lights at three theaters, all for different productions of his award-winning dramas. A new play, Sailor's Song, is at the Public Theater in the West Village, and he has two productions playing across from each other … [Read more...] about A Reason to Doubt

The funeral of Northern Irish human rights lawyer, Rosemary Nelson, was held at St. Peter’s Church in Lurgan on this day in 1999. Having obtained her degree in law from Queen’s University, Belfast, Nelson represented some high profile and controversial clients, including South Armagh Sniper, Michael Caraher, and the Garvaghy Road Residents’ Coalition. She claimed to have received a number of threats against her life and the lives of her children, both directly and indirectly, from the Royal Ulster Constabulary. At forty, she was killed by a car bomb outside her home in Lurgan, County Armagh. The Red Hand Defenders, a loyalist paramilitary group, later claimed responsibility for the assassination.
