John Duddy did not attend our Top 100 Irish-Americans of the Year event on March 16. He had a good reason – he was boxing the head off Shelby Pudwill in Madison Square Garden on the way to winning his first professional belt, the WBC Continental Americas middleweight title. He made quick work of Pudwill, knocking him out in 91 seconds, bringing his record to 16-0 with 14 … [Read more...] about Duddy Wins First Title

My grandfather, John Fay, was born in Finavarra, County Clare in 1896. The youngest of twelve children, he grew up on a farm that juts out into Galway Bay. That in itself seems … [Read more...] about Photo Album:

It has been a busy few months for the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform [ILIR].  Shortly after we went to press on our Top 100 issue, well over 2,000 Irish from all over the country descended on Washington, D.C. for a day of lobbying where they were addressed by Senators McCain, Kennedy, Clinton and Schumer.  In what was a memorable display of solidarity, March 8 was the day … [Read more...] about ILIR Intensify Lobbying as Immigration Reform is Addressed in the Senate

Pierce Brosnan was born in Navan, County Meath. He was brought up by his grandparents and aunt, while his mother worked in England. At 11, he moved to England to join his mother. In an interview with Irish America in 2003, he described it as a difficult transition. He was singled out for being Irish in school. “There certainly were fights,” he said, but the experience made him “resilient.” Brosnan left school at 15 and trained with the circus. Later he was introduced to the Oval House Theatre Club in London. He studied at the Drama Center in London. In 1980, he moved to the United States to star as Rory O’Manion in The Mangans of America, a hugely popular TV series. In 1994, he became the fifth James Bond.
