Loci Orthopaedics, a Galway-based medical devices start-up that has developed a new joint implant to treat arthritis, announced on July 7 that it has raised €2.75 million in a seed round. Funds for Marine Technology and Agritech

Enterprise Ireland launched a €500,000 Competitive Start Fund for entrepreneurs in marine technology and agritech sectors on June 29. The Man Booker Prize, a prestigious literary award with a cash prize of £50,000, which each year honors the best original novel written in English and published in the U.K., has expanded its parameters to include books by Irish publishers. April 7, 1947

On April 7, 1947, Henry Ford, auto industry pioneer and the grandson of Irish immigrants from Ballinascarthy, Co. Cork, died at 83 years of age. Born in Dearborn, Michigan in July 1883, Ford studied engineering and went on to invent the iconic Model T and the assembly line, and to found Ford Motor Company. He also introduced the now-standard concept of minimum wage, and was an early supporter of the 8 hour work day.
