Top 100 - 2011

Bob Hurley

Longtime coach Bob Hurley has earned his place in the Basketball Hall of Fame. For over 40 years, Hurley has led the St. Anthony High School basketball team in Jersey City, NJ to great success. Under Hurley’s lead, the St. Anthony Friars had an undefeated 2010-2011 season of 33-0, along with their 26th state championship and a fourth national title. A recent 60 Minutes episode about Coach Hurley and his team was the icing on the cake.

Hurley is dedicated to helping and motivating the kids on his team. He is a former probation officer of 28 years, and uses those skills to keep his athletes in check and lead them to success on the court and in their future. He has turned down college coaching jobs to work with city kids, despite never earning more than a $9,000 annual stipend throughout his 40 years with the St. Anthony Friars.

On August 13, 2010, Hurley was recognized for his accomplishments and inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He was the only person inducted that year and he is one of only three high school coaches to ever be inducted. His success continued when he became the 10th coach in high school history to win 1,000 games on February 2, 2011.

Bob Hurley is a role model to those on his team and his own kids. His sons Danny and Bobby Hurley. Also Top 100 honorees, are both coaches at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY.
