Fr. Edward Molloy
Notre Dame President
Father Edward Malloy, the 16th president of Notre Dame university, is the man behind the tightening links between Notre Dame and educational institutions in Ireland. It’s been four years since he first led a delegation from Indiana to Ireland.
The links between the university and Ireland have also manifested themselves in a series of American football games being played in Ireland.
Father Malloy, a native of Washington, D.C., received his masters degree in English from Notre Dame in 1967, and has been a member of the department of theology since 1974. He was first elected by the university’s board of trustees in 1986. As a professor of Theology, he continues to teach that subject at the university, and is a past chair of the American Council on Education.
Father Malloy is a founding director of the Points of Light initiative, a national foundation which promotes community service. He was appointed to the Advisory Council on Drugs by then-President George Bush in 1989. Last year he was appointed to the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
His book, Culture and Commitment: The Challenges of Today’s University was published in 1992 by Note Dame Press.
