Michael Flatley
Champion Dancer
Some years ago, National Geographic magazine described World champion dancer Michael Flatley as a “national treasure.”
The Chicago native manages an astounding 28 taps a second when dancing, and he set a world record by doing so. Michael Flatley was 12 years old when he decided he wanted to take Irish dancing classes, but the first teacher he approached told him he was too old. Flatley persisted, and a mere five years later won the Irish Dancing World Cup. He has also been a three-time all-Ireland flute champion (silver and wood).
Flatley gained national attention in Ireland with the superb dance show Riverdance, which he choreographed. His blend of modern and ancient Irish dance delighted his fans, and started a revival in Irish dance is its home country.
Flatley lives with his wife, Beata, in Beverly Hills, California, but spends much of his time in Ireland. He has just finished working on a new dance show.
