
Tom Murphy
Mayor
Tom Murphy is the 55th Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, a post he took up in January, 1994. He is a Democrat who previously served for 15 years as a Pennsylvania State Representative from the 20th legislative district.
Murphy is a take-charge, direct leader, and Pittsburgh has undergone some marked changes for the better under his administration. Murphy first concentrated on economic and neighborhood development, and programs which enhanced opportunities for the youth of the area. He has attracted new business to the area, and is developing 35 miles of the city’s waterfront to encourage more growth.
He created a Gun Task Force in an attempt to keep illegal guns out of the hands of the city’s youth, and started a baseball league for them.
Murphy graduated from New York’s Hunter College with a masters degree in science, and served with the Peace Corps for two years in Paraguay. He takes a deep interest in Irish affairs. The son of a Pittsburgh steelworker, Murphy is married to Mona McMahon, and the couple have three children.
