Arrest made by police investigating murder of 84-year-old man in Co. Down

POLICE investigating the murder of a man in Co. Down have made an arrest. Sean Small, 84, was found deceased outside a property in the Slievenabrock Avenue area of Newcastle on Sunday, August 24. Net migration to Ireland drops but sharp rise from the US

NEWLY released figures show a sharp rise in the number of people migrating from the US to Ireland. While overall immigration to Ireland has fallen in the last year by 16%, the number of American citizens moving to the country has nearly doubled. On this day in 1989, Irish playwright Samuel Beckett died. Following his wife Suzanne’s death in July of that same year, Beckett was confined to a nursing home suffering from emphysema and Parkinson’s. He died at the age of 83. Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. His wife viewed the award as a “catastrophe,” fearing the fame and attention it would garner. Beckett, however, was already quite famous for his plays such as “Waiting for Godot,” “Krapp’s Last Tape,” “Endgame,” and “Happy Days.”
