Mourners pay respects at funeral of family killed in Co. Louth tragedy

A JOINT funeral has taken place for three family members killed in Co. Louth last week. Mark O’Connor, 54, his wife Louise O’Connor, 56, and their 27-year-old son Evan O’Connor were found dead at their home in Drumgowna, Tallanstown on Monday, September 29. Chicken cull after suspected bird flu case found on Co. Tyrone farm

THOUSANDS of chickens will be culled on a commerical farm in Co. Tyrone after a suspected case of bird flu was detected. William Butler Yeats, Ireland’s most famous poet and one of the leading literary figures of the 20th century, was born in Sandyhurst, Co. Dublin on this day in 1865 to an upper class Protestant family. He spent much of his childhood in Co. Sligo, which heavily influenced Yeats’s natural themes, and he read classics like Shakespeare, Donne, Alighieri and Shelley. With Lady Gregory, he helped establish the Gaelic Literary Revival and founded the Abbey Theater in Dublin. He was the first Irishman awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923, followed by Shaw, Beckett and Heaney.
