FRAUD offences have risen in the first half of the year, with new Garda figures showing a 73% increase compared to last year. Tánaiste calls on Russia to agree to full ceasefire in conflict with Ukraine

Endangered red panda cubs born at Irish wildlife park

TWO endangered red panda cubs have been born at a wildlife park in Ireland. Fota Wildlife Park in Co. Cork announced this week that the cubs had been born at its conservation centre on June 7. While not yet visible to the public, the park has called on people to help name the cubs and hopes their birth will help raise awareness of the decline of the species in the wild. Edna O’Brien, Irish novelist and short story writer, was born on this day in County Clare in 1930. Born to strictly religious parents, O’Brien described her childhood as suffocating. She was educated from 1941 to 1946 by the Sisters of Mercy. She then went on to receive a license in pharmacy in 1950. O’Brien turned to writing and published “The County Girls” in 1960. It was the first in a trilogy that was banned from Ireland. In 2009, she received the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Book Awards in Dublin.
