GARDAÍ have appealed for witnesses to come forward after a driver died in a collision in Cork city. The single vehicle incident happened at the Sarsfield Roundabout in Wilton at around 1.50pm yesterday afternoon. Concerns raised across Ireland after outbreak of bluetongue confirmed in North

THE Irish Government has increased surveillance at farms across the country after an outbreak of bluetongue was confirmed in Northern Ireland. Irish state buys 100 acres of land to expand Glen of the Downs beauty spot

THE Irish Government has purchased 100 acres of land next to the Glen of the Downs beauty spot in Co. Wicklow. The site is one of Ireland’s few remaining ancient oak woodlands and ranks fifth in the country in terms of its condition. Bluetongue found in herd of cows in Northern Ireland

MORE than 40 suspected cases of bluetongue have been found in cows at a farm in Co. Down. Two cases were recently recorded at the farm in Bangor but now testing carried out by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has revealed the disease may be present in a further 44 cattle at the site. The Irish government announced on this day in 1999 that the state had purchased the 550 acre site of the Battle of the Boyne for £9 million. In 1690, forces under rival claimants to the English throne, Catholic King James and Protestant King William, met at the River Boyne near Drogheda and fought. The battle was won by William, ending James’s quest to regain the crown and instituting the Protestant rule in Ireland. The site, which was purchased from an unidentified business man, was redeveloped and is now a tourist centre.
