Man jailed over ‘vicious assault’ on English tourists in Derry

A MAN has been jailed over a 'vicious assault' on two English tourists in Derry. At the city's Crown Court on Tuesday, 54-year-old Philip Donnelly was sentenced to six years over the incident, which occurred on Duke Street in the early hours of Saturday, June 24, 2023. Man charged with murder following death of Michael O’Donnell

DETECTIVES investigating the death of a man in West London have charged a man with murder. Michael O’Donnell, 66, was found dead after officers were called to a residential property in Samara Drive, Southall at around 11am on Wednesday, April 23. Edna O’Brien, Irish novelist and short story writer, was born on this day in County Clare in 1930. Born to strictly religious parents, O’Brien described her childhood as suffocating. She was educated from 1941 to 1946 by the Sisters of Mercy. She then went on to receive a license in pharmacy in 1950. O’Brien turned to writing and published “The County Girls” in 1960. It was the first in a trilogy that was banned from Ireland. In 2009, she received the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Book Awards in Dublin.
