This Apple Didn’t Fall Far from the Tree Whenever someone notable first grabs my attention, I can’t resist climbing the branches of their family tree to see — among other things — whether they might have a bit of Irish ancestry. Such was the case with Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate — as well as governor, teacher, coach, veteran, animal lover, and the … [Read more...] about Tim Walz’s Irish Great-Great-Grandparents

Patron of Wolves | Feast Day September 12th St. Ailbe, sometimes known by his anglicized name, St. Elvis, was a 6th-century saint born in County Tipperary. The name Ailbe is derived from the old Irish words Ail (rock) and beo (alive) since as a newborn, the saint was discovered alive under a rock where he had been hidden… by a wolf. Ailbe was the illegitimate offspring of a … [Read more...] about St. Ailbe of Emly

New Age health spas, springing up alongside the more traditional seaweed baths, are enticing people to Ireland for healing vacations as never before. John Wayne did it. W. B. Yeats did it. Even the pagan Druids did it. They all went on healing vacations. Yesterday's movers and shakers knew then what today's vacationers are just discovering -- Ireland has the power to heal … [Read more...] about Healing Places of Ireland

April 12, 1861

On this day in 1861, the first official shots of the American Civil War were fired. The short battle, which took place at Union-held Fort Sumter  in Charleston, South Carolina, marked the beginning of the war, though it was not the first unofficial battle to occur. The skirmish lasted for 34 hours and resulted in U.S. Major Robert Anderson’s surrender of the fort to Confederate forces. Four years after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, Union forces defeated the Confederacy. Many newly immigrated Irish fought in the war, a significant number of them gathering in the 69th Regiment, which became known as the Irish Brigade.
