A MAN has been sentenced to three months in prison for starting a fire in a block of flats while residents were inside. A fire broke out in a communal hallway of flats in Somme Park in Derry in the early hours of on Friday, April 5. AN elderly man who was found seriously injured on a road died in hospital days after the incident. Patrick McCooey was found with serious injuries on Royal Drive in Leigh, Greater Manchester on June 28. Man charged with murder of Irishman Fintan McDwyer in Manchester

A MAN has been charged with the murder of an Irishman in Manchester. Direece Roche is due to appear Manchester Magistrates Court today. Concern for man missing from Ireland who may now be in England

A MAN who is missing from Ireland may now be in England, according to police. Martin Lambert is believed to have left Ireland and arrived in England on June 14 and may have travelled to Sittingbourne in Kent on June 25. On this day in 1834, Daniel O’Connell, the Irish political leader often referred to as “The Liberator” or “The Emancipator,” sparked a debate in the British House of Commons by calling for a repeal to the 1801 Act of Union. During a five-hour speech, O’Connell questioned the 2/17 tax that Britain had levied on Ireland, calling it a “fraction purposely introduced in order that Ireland might be robbed with greater facility.” Previously, O’Connell had successfully campaigned for the right for Catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament. A critic of violent insurrection and a staunch abolitionist, he would serve as an inspiration to Frederick Douglass, and later to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
