Dublin Zoo ‘devastated’ as second elephant dies after contracting fatal virus

TWO elephants have died at Dublin Zoo due to a fatal virus despite an international effort to save the animals. Zinda, a seven-year-old Asian elephant, died on July 7, due to Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV),  the zoo has confirmed. Cannabis worth €300k found on flight from Thailand to Dublin

CANNABIS worth €300k was found in the baggage of a passenger on a flight from Thailand to Dublin. Investigation underway after bodies found in Dublin canal

GARDAÍ are investigating after two bodies were discovered in the Grand Canal in Dublin. Officers were alerted at around 8am on July 6 to reports of a body in the water at the Grand Parade area. On this day in 1834, Daniel O’Connell, the Irish political leader often referred to as “The Liberator” or “The Emancipator,” sparked a debate in the British House of Commons by calling for a repeal to the 1801 Act of Union. During a five-hour speech, O’Connell questioned the 2/17 tax that Britain had levied on Ireland, calling it a “fraction purposely introduced in order that Ireland might be robbed with greater facility.” Previously, O’Connell had successfully campaigned for the right for Catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament. A critic of violent insurrection and a staunch abolitionist, he would serve as an inspiration to Frederick Douglass, and later to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
