Pat Hume, the widow of the late SDLP leader and Nobel prize winner John Hume died on September 2nd. A former teacher, Pat worked alongside her husband throughout his career – from the civil rights movement in the 1960s to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, and was deeply involved in the Derry community. American, Canadian and Irish engineers are successful in their combined efforts to fly the first transatlantic model plane. The plane, named the “Spirit of Butts Farm” after its testing site, landed on August 11, 2003 in Galway, 38 hours after it took off from Canada. The small wood and mylar plane flew a total of 1,888 miles using satellite navigation and an autopilot system.
