The Last Rebel of the 1916 Rising

The last remaining person in the U.S. to have fought in the 1916 Rising in Ireland died in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 99 on January 21, 1996. The third Catholic Relief Act came into effect on this day in 1782. This act follows the second which was issued on May 4, 1782. Combined, the two Relief acts allow Catholics to own land outside of parliamentary boundaries, allow Catholics to become teachers, and allow them to act as guardians. These acts are part of the movement for Catholic emancipation and the removal of restrictions brought about by the Penal laws.
