The World Irish Dancing Championships were held in April in Glasgow, Scotland, and several Americans came away with medals in competition among the best youth dancers in the world. William Trevor, short story-writer and novelist, was born in Co. Cork. Trevor, who has won the Whitbread Prize three times and has been short-listed five times for the Booker Prize, is considered one of Ireland’s greatest writers. In a rare interview with Irish America magazine in 1992 Trevor said, “I think we Irish are a nation of storytellers. If you study the way we argue, you find we sometimes do so by telling a story. We make points by telling stories. They tell far more stories in the Dail than they do in the British House of Commons. I can never explain why stories are natural in Ireland, but they are, and sometimes it’s better to leave it at that, and just say the are.”
