Golden Globe-winning actress Saoirse Ronan.

The Irish actress earned raves in the November coming-of-age movie Lady Bird, which was directed to great acclaim by indie darling Greta Gerwig. Prior to that, Ronan was in the visually-groundbreaking (if coolly reviewed) Loving Vincent, which told the story of painter Vincent van Gogh’s life and featured thousands of hand-painted scenes. The new year will see Ronan in a range … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood:

Saoirse Ronan may be hoping that English best-selling author Ian McEwan gets her a second Academy Award nomination. Early next year, Ronan will star alongside English actor Bill Howle in the dark romance On Chesil Beach, which had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival back in September. Ronan, of course, burst onto the world stage back in 2007, with her star turn in … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood:

Given the raves she earned with her searing performance in Brooklyn, we can expect many breakthrough performances from Saoirse Ronan in the years to come. But one of her next projects is a breakthrough film of an entirely different nature. Ronan and several other Irish actors will appear in what is being called the first painted animated film in the history of cinema. The movie … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood:

In January, actress Saoirse Ronan stopped by the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She was there to promote her movie Brooklyn, but the conversation moved into Ronan teaching Colbert (whose ancestry is 15/16 Irish) both how to speak with an Irish accent and how to pronounce traditional Irish names – something that has no doubt been a problem since at least the eighth century, … [Read more...] about A Guide to Pronouncing

In November, Brooklyn finally arrives in theaters. This long-awaited Irish immigrant saga (based on Colm Tóibín novel) stars Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson and was directed by Cork native John Crowley. Ronan plays an immigrant to 1950s New York who falls in love with an Italian American only to face a tough choice when family troubles arise back home in Ireland. William Trevor, short story-writer and novelist, was born in Co. Cork. Trevor, who has won the Whitbread Prize three times and has been short-listed five times for the Booker Prize, is considered one of Ireland’s greatest writers. In a rare interview with Irish America magazine in 1992 Trevor said, “I think we Irish are a nation of storytellers. If you study the way we argue, you find we sometimes do so by telling a story. We make points by telling stories. They tell far more stories in the Dail than they do in the British House of Commons. I can never explain why stories are natural in Ireland, but they are, and sometimes it’s better to leave it at that, and just say the are.”
