Having conquered the world of music and shed light on global poverty, U2 lead singer Bono is now eyeing Hollywood. Presumably this is the charismatic crooner's way to kill time until he is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Until then, Bono is developing a film project which revolves around an Irish musician who comes to the United States to work with a show band in Las Vegas. … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood

Brendan Gleeson is turning into Hollywood's go-to-guy, at least when it comes to supporting characters. Gleeson's credits, in the last few years, are a tour through A-list Hollywood, from his role in Martin Scorsese's Irish warrior flick Gangs of New York to more recent turns in Troy and the creepy summer blockbuster The Village (directed by Sixth Sense creator M. Night … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood

When he learned he had just won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a play, Irish actor Brían O'Byrne took to the stage looking stunned. "I'm not sure if a grinning Irish guy who's speechless for 45 seconds is going to make good TV," he said. "But it might be just what you get." Who cares if it makes for good TV? O'Byrne has shown he can rule the … [Read more...] about Brían O’Byrne Wins a Tony

The United Nations was born in Washington, D.C. on this day in 1945. During a short ceremony, representatives from a total of 29 nations ratified the UN charter which declared that nations work together to uphold human rights and work together to overcome social, economic, humanitarian and political challenges. Formed in the wake of World War II, Ireland was at first denied access to the UN on the grounds that the country took a neutral stance during the war and did not aid the Allied forces. Ireland was accepted into the UN ten years later, in 1955. Although Ireland did not join NATO, they became an active nation, contributing Irish Defence Forces to UN peace-keeping missions in Congo, Cyprus, Lebanon and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
