Pipe bomb thrown through house window exploded while elderly couple were inside

November 5, 2024 by

A SECURITY alert in Derry has ended this morning after a pipe bomb attack in the city last night.

At around 7.30pm yesterday (November 4) PSNI officers were called to reports of an object being thrown at a house in the Limewood Street area of the city.

The incident happened in Limewood Street in Derry

The pipe bomb exploded after being thrown through a window, causing damage to the property, but the elderly couple who were inside the building at the time of the attack managed to escape unharmed.

Officers secured the area and alerted army technical officers while a security alert was put in place.

This morning the PSNI’s Detective Sergeant Mark Gingell confirmed the object has been declared as a “viable suspected pipe bomb”, which has now been removed and taken away for further forensic examination.

“It is believed that this device was put through the window of the house and has exploded,” Det Serg Gingell said.

“This has caused damage to the property but could have led to the occupants being badly injured or even killed.”

A security alert put in place last night has ended this morning

SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has condemned the attack.

“An elderly couple have had a device thrown through their window in what must have been a shocking and distressing attack on their home,” he said.

“There is no excuse for it. The people responsible have caused an immense amount of disruption for this family and the local community.

“If anyone has information about this attack, I would encourage them to bring it forward to the police.”

The PSNI have issued an appeal this morning for those with information about the incident to come forward.

“We are appealing to anyone with information regarding this crime, and anyone who may have captured any footage in the area on Monday evening to contact detectives at Strand Road on 101, quoting reference 1516 of 04/11/24.
