Irish screen great Ciarán Hinds to receive top Irish Post award

November 19, 2025 by

CIARÁN HINDS will be honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Film & TV Award at the Irish Post Awards on Thursday, November 27.

A sparkling evening of entertainment will see every sector of our community feted and honoured, but one of the main cultural awards goes to the Belfast man.

Ciarán’s roles have spanned theatre, television and film with an extraordinary range and depth. He spent early years working with the Glasgow Citizens Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing major roles such as Richard III, and establishing an early reputation for his intelligence, gravitas and versatility.

Born in Belfast on 9 February 1953, Hinds grew up in a Catholic household in north Belfast, the only son among five children of a doctor father and a mother who was a schoolteacher and amateur actress.

After beginning his studies in law at Queen’s University Belfast, he followed his passion for performance and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1975.

In cinema and television, Ciarán’s credits are wide-ranging: from the stylised world of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) to starring roles in Munich (2005), There Will Be Blood (2007), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), voice-work in Frozen (2013) and, notably, his emotionally resonant turn in Belfast (2021), which garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

His television work is similarly expansive — from playing Julius Caesar in the series Rome to appearing in Game of Thrones.

On the film awards front, the Irish Film & Television Academy lists his wins and nominations, such as IFTA wins for his work in Belfast (2022) and in drama series.

The Irish Post Outstanding Contribution to Film & TV award is not about one role or one moment: it is about sustained excellence, craftsmanship, versatility and influence. Ciarán Hinds more than meets all these criteria. He has taken on roles that demand nuance, marked by subtle power, intelligence and emotional truth.

The Irish Post Awards return on Thursday, November 27

Venue: The Great Room, JW Marriott Grosvenor House, London
