A JOINT funeral will be held for a couple who died following a collision in Co. Cavan earlier this week.
Donegal natives James and Noreen McHugh were in a car which collided with a van on the N3 at Drummallaght, between Virginia and Cavan, shortly before 2pm on August 10.
Mr McHugh, a former Donegal footballer and All-Ireland winner, was driving the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife Noreen was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
She died in hospital on the evening of August 11, Gardaí have confirmed in a statement.
Donegal County Council has paid tribute to the pair, who hailed from Kilcar.
“The Cathaoirleach, Elected Members and Staff of Donegal County Council wish to express their profound sadness on learning of the tragic passing of James and Noreen McHugh,” they said.
“On behalf of the people of Donegal, the Council extends its heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the McHugh and O’Donnell families, their relatives, friends, neighbours and all those grieving this devastating loss,” they added.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
A joint funeral Mass will take place at St. Cartha’s Church in Kilcar this Saturday, August 15 at 11am, followed with burial in Towney Graveyard.
Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who was travelling on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan on that day, particularly between 1pm and 2pm, to come forward.
“Any motorists who may have dashcam or other camera footage of the area during this time is asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí,” they said in a statement.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Bailieboro Garda Station on 042 969 4570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station,” they added.
