The Irish Who Signed the Declaration of Independence

By Brendan Patrick Keane, Contributor

July 1, 2015 by 7 Comments

The Declaration of Independence is a beautiful document, and when I was a kid, I had an image of it on my wall. There were Irish names, including "McKean" on that original parchment, and that gave me the story I needed to feel at home here like a native. My love of country, the United States, and my heritage (Irish) converge in that document because I acknowledge the Irish who … [Read more...] about The Irish Who Signed the Declaration of Independence

In a five to four ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court effectively voted to overturn states’ bans on same-sex marriage June 26th – the same day as United States v. Windsor (which overturned the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013) and Lawrence v. Texas (which overturned a Texas law – and by extension all state laws – forbidding consensual sex between two persons of the same sex in 2003). … [Read more...] about Weekly Comment: Justice

This week, a tragedy of national proportion befell Ireland and Irish America. In the first morning hour of Tuesday, June 16th, a fourth floor balcony collapsed in Berkeley, California, killing six Irish citizens, and critically injuring seven more who were standing on it at the time. Five of the dead were on short-term J-1 student work visas for the summer. The sixth was … [Read more...] about Weekly Comment:

Literary fireworks are once again set to go off all over the world as nations celebrate Bloomsday on June 16. On this day in 1980, Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in a landslide election. Reagan was born in Illinois on February 6, 1911. His father, Jack Reagan, was the grandson to Irish Catholic immigrants from Co. Tipperary. Reagan became successful in Hollywood, appearing in famous roles like George Gipp (earning him the lifelong nickname “The Gipper”) in “Knute Rockne, All American” (1940.) Many considered 1924’s “King’s Row” his best film. Reagan went on to serve in the military. He became governor of California in 1967. He made his bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 1976, but was defeated by Gerald Ford. He served two terms as the 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. His terms were marked by such terms as “Reaganomics.”
