A Look at Leinster Leinster is sometimes overlooked by travelers to Ireland, with the raw and rugged splendor of the south, west and north coasts attracting more attention. However, the Leinster province, which is Ireland’s largest and borders the Irish Sea, has a rich resource of sights and sounds for visitors, including, of course, Dublin City. Leinster encompasses the … [Read more...] about A Look at Leinster

Back in 2004, Irish playwright Mark O’Rowe teamed up with Irish director John Crowley and a heavily Irish cast to film the underappreciated Intermission. The movie – which starred Colm Meaney, Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy – followed a band of bumbling tough guys, an egotistical TV newsman and a regular Joe whose lives unexpectedly intersect. The Crowleys refer to themselves as “a very average American family” who simply did “what almost any other parents would have wanted to do” in the face of a situation that was presented by the medical establishment to be hopeless. November 8, 1847

Bram Stoker, the famous author of “Dracula,” was born in Dublin on this day in 1847. Born Abraham Stoker, he was the third of seven children. He had a very sickly childhood and spent most of it bed-ridden, which allowed for his imagination to run wild. He recovered and attended Trinity College Dublin where he studied mathematics. Following Trinity, he found an interest in theater and became a critic. After reviewing Henry Irving’s production of “Hamlet,” the two became close friends and Stoker then went on to become business manager for Irving and the Lyceum Theater. While manager, Stoker began writing fiction. He published his novel “The Snake’s Pass” in 1890 and “Dracula” followed in 1897; it is considered the first definitive vampire novel.
