That pope held a special place in Irish Catholics’ hearts, as he was the first and only pope ever to visit the country. He visited in 1979. There wasn’t another papal visit until this summer when Pope Francis came for the World Meeting of Families. He arrived in Dublin on … [Read more...] about The Pope’s Visit to Ireland

My wife, Bridget Heaney, was born on June 7, 1944. She was one of 10 children raised by a single mother in Cavan, Ireland. Her mother eventually moved to England (Newbury) in search of work, and it was in Newbury that I met Bridget. I was 23 and she was 19. At the time, I was in the U.S. Air Force (U.S.A.F.) and stationed with the Strategic Air Command, at R.A.F. Greenham … [Read more...] about Photo Album: My First & Only Love

Tributes continue to pour in for Tom Moran, the former chairman and CEO of Mutual America, noted humanitarian, and peacemaker, who passed away at 65 on August 12 in New York City after a short illness. I have learned with sadness of the passing of Tom Moran, a leader in the Irish community in America who will be greatly missed. The news of Tom Moran's death just after midnight on Sunday, August 12, 2018 hit hard. Tom, who was 65, had a long, successful career at Mutual of America, which … [Read more...] about A Man of the People: Thomas J. Moran

Martin Dempsey, retired United States Army general who served as the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, writes about leadership and finding the right path. In writing about leadership, I’ve described some of the things I keep on my desk to remind me what’s really important: a walnut box filled with the pictures of my fallen Soldiers engraved “Make It Matter,” a 4-inch … [Read more...] about Weekly Comment:Following my Moral Compass

Dominick Dunne, investigative journalist and writer, was born on this day in Hartford, Connecticut in 1925. Dunne was born to a wealthy Irish Catholic family and he often recalled feeling like an outsider in the predominantly wealthy protestant part of West Hartford. On November 1982, Dunne’s daughter Dominique was murdered by John Thomas Sweeney. Dunne chronicled the trial of Sweeney, launching his career as an investigative journalist. He wrote several stories for Vanity Fair on different murders and trials. He went on to host his own tv show, “Dominick Dunne’s Power, Privilege and Justice” on CourtTV (truTV.) His show covered famous trials like the O.J. Simpson case.
