Council of Europe urges UK to promote use of Irish language in Northern Ireland

THE Council of Europe has called on the UK to make better efforts to promote the use of the Irish language in Northern Ireland. Experts at the organisation have published a report on the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man with regards to the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Police name Irish pedestrian killed in collision with lorry in London

POLICE have named a pedestrian who was killed in a collision with a lorry in north London last year. Thomas Murphy died after being involved in the incident which happened at around 3.30pm on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at the junction of Kilburn High Road and Cambridge Avenue. Second security alert at GAA grounds in Belfast declared a ‘hoax’

PSNI officers have confirmed a security alert at a GAA ground in Belfast yesterday afternoon was a ‘hoax’. The incident saw a suspicious object found at the Henry Jones Playing Fields on Church Road in Castlereagh, which are used by East Belfast GAA. Irish Government approves nominations for 17 global ambassadors

THE Irish government has approved the nomination of 17 ambassadors for countries across the globe. They include representatives who will be positioned in newly established Irish Embassies in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Moldova. Each appointment will take place during 2025, subject to agreement by the receiving states. On this day, Eamon de Valera abolished the Oath of Allegiance, a provisional aspect in the Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921. This provisional aspect originally required all members of the Irish parliament to take an oath declaring their allegiance to the King. This date also marked when de Valera withheld land annuities from England.
