A FORMER Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland was jailed today for sexual offences against an underage girl. Gary Thompson, of Rogan Wood in Newtownabbey, Co. Man arrested on suspicion of Kyran Durnin’s murder as two homes searched

GARDAÍ investigating the murder of eight-year-old Kyran Durnin have arrested a man in connection with the case. The man has been arrested “on suspicion of murder” gardaí confirmed in a statement this morning. He is being held at a Garda station in the east of the country, they added. Dickie Rock funeral takes place in showband legend’s hometown

THE funeral of showband legend Dickie Rock has taken place in Dublin today. The 88-year-old, from Cabra, died on December 6. Two new speed cameras will be operational in Ireland from tomorrow

TWO new speed cameras will be operational in Ireland from tomorrow gardaí hae confirmed today. The static speed safety camera systems, which are in place on the N17 in Ballinsmaula in Co. Mayo and N59 in Aubwee, Co. Galway, will go live from the morning, they confirmed in a statement. Archbishop Paul Cullen of Dublin becomes the first Irish cardinal on this day in 1866. Born in Co. Kildare, Cullen went on to study at the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. Cullen was appointed rector of Irish College and helped secure the college’s future. While rector from 1832-1850, he forged a close friendship with Pope Gregory XVI and Pope Pius IX and helped safeguard the interests of the Irish church. He was first made Archbishop of Armagh and then transferred to Archbishop of Dublin in 1852, where he would be later made a cardinal.
