By Patricia Harty, Editor-in-Chief We have been shaken by the reprehensible killing of George Floyd and so many others in America’s Black communities, as we grieve with the families of the victims of racial violence, we are heartened by all those who have shown solidarity through peaceful protests in communities throughout the country. We remember too, on this day that marks … [Read more...] about First Word:

As Ireland begins to emerge from its Coronavirus lockdown the national context reminds me of the Billy Joel hit ‘We didn’t start the fire,’ with its staccato allusions to global headline events over a number of years. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen forced, rapid change across every section of Irish society in a matter of months, leading many commentators to ponder what the ’new … [Read more...] about Latest News from Ireland

Through Their Eyes:

Larry Holmes vs. Gerry Cooney

June 5, 2020 by 2 Comments

By Thomas Hauser On June 11, 1982, Larry Holmes and Gerry Cooney entered the ring at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for one of the most highly anticipated fights of all time. In some respects, Holmes-Cooney marked the long-overdue end of an era. It was the last major championship bout to be marketed – and not subtly – as black versus white. Cooney was “the great white hope.” He … [Read more...] about Through Their Eyes:

Each year, 3.5 million visitors flock to Yellowstone National Park, the world’s first national park. Although Yellowstone is world famous, the story of Thomas Moran, the Irish American landscape painter, whom some call " the Founding Father of the National Parks," is not. When Dublin-born Thomas Moran Sr. arrived in Philadelphia  with his family from Bolton, England in … [Read more...] about The Founding Father of the National Parks

July 12, 1690

Protestant William of Orange and his forces defeated Catholic James II on this day in 1690 at Battle of the Boyne. William’s victory rendered James II’s attempt to regain the British throne unsuccessful and allowed for a continuation of Protestant ascendancy in Ireland. The battle was fought across the River Boyne near Drogheda. July 12 is also known as “The Twelfth” or “Orange Day” in Belfast.
