Anne Meara
Playwright
Perhaps better known as a comic than as a playwright, Anne Meara nevertheless made a smooth transition to the theater world with her work After-Play which has been running for more than a year at the Manhattan Theater Club’s Stage II.
Meara has always written her own comic material for her award-winning appearances with her other half, husband Jerry Stiller, so the lively dialogue in the play was no surprise.
Meara and her husband appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show more than 35 times, and she is a four-time Emmy nominee. She received a Writer’s Guild Award with co-writer Lila Garrett for CBS’s The Other Woman.
Among Meara’s acting credits are Anna Christie, the Broadway play for which she received a Tony nomination. Equally at home on the big screen, Meara has appeared in The Boys from Brazil, and Awakenings; and her TV credits include Murder, She Wrote, Archie Bunker’s Place and In the Heat of the Night.
