Cardinal John O’Connor

In his years as Archbishop of New York, John O’Connor has established a reputation as one of the most effective communicators in the history of the Catholic Church in the U.S. The cardinal has been outspoken in defending the Church’s stance on abortion and homosexuality and is a figure of controversy on the Irish issue. One of the first major American figures to meet with Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, the cardinal’s St. Patrick’s Day homilies always stress the need for peace in Northern Ireland. Last year the cardinal celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination and led New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

He is a native Scranton, Pennsylvania and his ancestors came from County Roscommon.
