Joey Mullen
Hockey Player
From the mean streets of Hell’s Kitchen on New York’s West Side to the National Hockey League is quite a leap, but one which hockey ace joey Mullen made with comparative ease given his enormous talent.
From the tenements of New York to the St. Louis Blues, the Calgary Flames, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Boston Bruins, Joey Mullen became the first ever U.S.-born player to produce 1,000 points, including 484 goals in the NHL.
Mullen’s brother, Brian, also made the big leagues, playing hockey with the New York Rangers, the Winnipeg Jets, the San Jose Sharks and the Islanders before a stroke and heart surgery ended his career after 260 goals. He now directs the NHL’s off-ice programs.
The two brothers won the Lester Patrick Award for “outstanding service to hockey in the United States.”
Joey Mullen is a graduate of Boston College, and would have played hockey for the 1980 Olympic team which won the gold medal if he hadn’t been signed up six months earlier with the St. Louis Blues. Joey’s parents, Tom and Marion Mullen, moved from New York to New Jersey at that time, but Joey Mullen still visits Hell’s Kitchen.
