John J. Murphy
United Association of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry
John Murphy is an International Representative of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry, where he represents 13 UA local unions across New York. He is also a Vice President of the NY City Central Labor Council, NY State Building and Construction Trades Council, and the NY State AFL-CIO.
Inducted into United Association (UA) Local 2 in 1984, John is now the voice of more than 24,000 plumbers, steam fitters, pipe fitters, sprinkler fitters, welders, and HVAC technicians in the construction and service trades. UA members are currently leading New York’s clean energy transition, from thermal energy heating and cooling system projects to new advances in nuclear technology, forging a path towards energy independence while creating thousands of family sustaining jobs.
John was elected Recording Secretary in 1996 and has since held the positions of Business Agent, Financial Secretary-Treasurer, and Business Manager before
being unanimously elected as International Representative in both 2016 and 2021. He recently served as the 142nd Grand Marshal of the New York City Labor Day Parade in 2024.
John serves on the boards of NYS Helmets to Hardhats, Climate Jobs NY, Climate Jobs National Resource Center, the Workers Institute Advisory Council at Cornell University, and the Cornell Climate Jobs Advisory Board and the James Connolly Irish American Labor Coalition. A Bronx native with roots in County Tipperary from his mother’s side and County Cork on his father’s side, John is most proud of his beautiful family, his wife, Jeannine and sons Ryan and his wife Taylor, and Christian.
