Mary McGrory
Political Columnist
Since Mary McGrory joined the Washington Post as a columnist in 1981, its political coverage has certainly been spiced up. But McGrory’s column has been syndicated since 1960, so millions of readers have been given the benefit of her political wisdom.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist – for commentary in 1975 – began her career at the Boston Herald, and spent time with the Washington Star as a book reviewer. Her debut as a national commentator came in the spring of 1954 when she was assigned to cover one of the century’s biggest stories, the McCarthy hearings.
When she went on to win the Pulitzer, the citation read: “For trenchant commentary spread over more than 20 years as a reporter and columnist in the nation’s capital.” McGrory also received the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild Front Page Award on numerous occasions.
