Investigation after teen subjected to racially-motivated assault in Belfast

POLICE are treating a report of an assault on a teenager in Belfast as a racially-motivated hate crime. The incident occurred at around 5.15pm on Monday, February 3, in Aughrim Park in the south of the city. A COUPLE who were found dead in their home in Co. Kerry have been named locally as David and Hazel Byrne. Three arrests made after gardaí seize drugs valued at €14m

THREE men have been arrested after gardaí seized drugs with an estimated total value of more than €14m. Approximately 182kg of cocaine and 4kg of cannabis herb were seized during searches in Mountmellick, Co. Laois and a number of other locations on Tuesday. Edna O’Brien, Irish novelist and short story writer, was born on this day in County Clare in 1930. Born to strictly religious parents, O’Brien described her childhood as suffocating. She was educated from 1941 to 1946 by the Sisters of Mercy. She then went on to receive a license in pharmacy in 1950. O’Brien turned to writing and published “The County Girls” in 1960. It was the first in a trilogy that was banned from Ireland. In 2009, she received the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Book Awards in Dublin.
