The very talented Paul Brady makes a welcome reappearance with his fifth solo release, Trick Or Treat (Mercury-Phonogram). Born in Strabane, County Tyrone, Brady has been through an unfair share of career disappointments in the past and has shown his mettle (non-heavy) by overcoming all adversity. To his credit, he has remained true to his craft and won the respect and support … [Read more...] about Music Review | Packaged for the Top: Brady

That Easter Monday, 1916, seventy-five years ago this month, was a sleepy one in Dublin. Most of the sporting set, high society and many common folk had gone to the Fairyhouse races, where the Irish Grand National was the star attraction. My own grandfather, from County Sligo, had taken the train to the races, the biggest meeting of the year. Years later he would relate how it … [Read more...] about First Word: Birth of a Nation

The United Nations was born in Washington, D.C. on this day in 1945. During a short ceremony, representatives from a total of 29 nations ratified the UN charter which declared that nations work together to uphold human rights and work together to overcome social, economic, humanitarian and political challenges. Formed in the wake of World War II, Ireland was at first denied access to the UN on the grounds that the country took a neutral stance during the war and did not aid the Allied forces. Ireland was accepted into the UN ten years later, in 1955. Although Ireland did not join NATO, they became an active nation, contributing Irish Defence Forces to UN peace-keeping missions in Congo, Cyprus, Lebanon and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
