The 31st Galway Arts Festival, which ran from July 14-27, was another huge success for both the city and lovers of the arts.  Though Ireland was soaked with enough rain to dampen the most ardent optimist this summer, for 14 days the city of the Tribesmen was drenched with music, theater and art. One couldn’t take a stroll down the quays without encountering some jovial … [Read more...] about Galway Arts Festival

Tourists and art aficionados crowded the streets of Galway City for the 30th annual Galway Arts Festival during the last two weeks of July. Despite the rainiest summer Ireland has seen in years, the street performers were out in full force. Colorfully dressed mimes posed as statues, the tunes of local musicians echoed through the streets, and theatrical groups such as The … [Read more...] about Arts Flourish in Galway

The West Patricia Harty’s tour of the West Landing in the West of Ireland “the cultural heartland” is a wonderful introduction to Ireland. “It is,” as Liam Scollan, the CEO of Ireland West Airport, Co. Mayo, said, “a way for Irish-Americans whose ancestors left this part of the world centuries ago to experience Ireland, which has changed little since that time.” The western … [Read more...] about Ireland’s Cultural Heartland: A Visit to Ireland’s West and Northwest

Irish drug baron and gangster George “The Penguin” Mitchell was arrested in Amsterdam on this day in 1998, after being caught stealing five million pounds worth of computer parts. A native of Ballyfermot in Dublin, he became involved with associates of the murdered gangland boss Martin “The General” Cahill, and participated in a number of their robberies. He moved from Dublin to Amsterdam in 1996, after the arrest of his right-hand man, Johnny Doran. Rumors surfaced that he had fled the country after being placed on an IRA death list, though this claim was later refuted–his flight attributed to the close attention he was receiving from the Garda.
