The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) declared war on the IRA, issuing the following statement: “From this day, we declare war against the Irish Republican Army and its splinter groups. We are heavily armed Protestants dedicated to this cause.” The UVF, who began decommissioning its weapons in June, 2009, have claimed over 500 lives, mostly Catholics.
